Violca’s Dragon

blurb2

Violca Grey knows life can change instantly. Two years after her parents’ sudden death, Violca is left raising her four younger sisters. She doesn’t realize that their lives are all in danger from something that may not be human.

Chase Reed knows the Grey sisters possibly hold the key to his fate. He is determined to get close, protect them and bring them to his Dragon King.

Together, Chase and Violca not only have to protect their families—they also have to fight against their rising feelings for each other. But what Violca doesn’t know is that once a dragon decides he wants something, there is no stopping him from getting it.

excerpt1

Standing in front of her, he looked her over and when she finally looked up at him, he noticed that her violet eyes were darker as she looked at him angrily. “I didn’t ask you for your help,” she snapped.

Chase knew that smiling at her right now would not help him, nor would telling her she looked beautiful when she was angry. Watching her breasts rise and fall as she breathed, her violet eyes sparkle with anger, and the straight line of her lips, he fought the urge to kiss her. “You didn’t, but that doesn’t mean I want to see you hurt.”

She glared at him. “Why’re you here? What do you want with me?”

Chase stepped closer to her and reached up to touch her cheek, dropping his hand when she seemed to flinch before he could touch her. “I’m here because I wanted to make sure you’re safe.”

She snorted at him and he couldn’t help but smile at the unfeminine sound. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.” She pushed her hair back from her face and looked up at him, her voice lowering to almost a whisper, “Why did you kiss me? Was it just to get close to me?”

Chase saw a flash of hurt in her eyes and he stepped in front of her, cupping her cheek, making sure she looked at him when he answered, “I kissed you because there was no way I could be near you and not.”

Leilani Love

Featured Book: Violca’s Dragon

Hello everyone. Nice to meet you.

Hello, Leilani! How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve been writing for about seven years. I moved to a very small town in Oregon. I had enough time to start reading again and one day…started writing

How did you come up with this storyline?
My witches are born from my dreams while my storyline came from research on dragons.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
The worst part of writing is editing. Not my strong suit. I wish you just wrote your rough draft and it was done and magically edited itself. Favorite part of writing is coming up with my characters and my storyline. I fall in love with all my characters.

What inspires you to write?
The voices in my head of course. Just kidding, there is something that makes me feel complete when I write. My imagination has always been over active so now it has an outlet.

How did you conduct your research for Violca’s Dragon?
I researched dragons. The dragons I went back and forth on and looked up different myths. I end up settling on the Greek’s version of dragons. What would happen if the God’s didn’t kill the dragons after they helped killed the Titans? What reason would they have to spare their lives? And if the Gods did keep them around…would they let them stay as big and powerful?

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from Violca’s Dragon?

Chase saw a flash of hurt in her eyes and he stepped in front of her, cupping her cheek, making sure she looked at him when he answered, “I kissed you because there was no way I could be near you and not.”

Chase knew that smiling at her right now would not help him, nor would telling her she looked beautiful when she was angry.

Chase smirked, looking down and she noticed a small tent forming under the blanket. Violca felt her cheeks heating up, and clearing her throat, she tried to hide her embarrassment when he announced, “As you can see I’m already up. But if you’d like, I’ll join you downstairs in a few minutes.”

More Favorites from Violca’s Dragon:
Fun scene between Chase and one of his best friends:
Chase headed over to his bag, and grabbing a shirt, pulled it over his head. “Put your shirt on Scott, before you scare the kids.”
Scott chuckled, flexing. “You’re just worried that Violca will have a hard time keeping her hands off the guns.”
Chase snorted. “Guns, really?”

What would your friends say is your best quality?
Sarcasm and shenanigans of course.

Are reader reviews important to you?
Of course. Writing for the most part is very solitary and you wonder if anyone is going to read your book, let alone like it. Reviews and messages from people who enjoyed my book make my day and encourage me to keep going.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I have two boys that keep me very busy and a day job. I also read and love to go hiking.

Tell us about your other books?
The other books I have written are part of the same series. Showing you more of this world and other characters that lives all tie together in some way.

Thank you guys for taking the time to get to know me a little better. I hope you guys all have a wonderful day!

blurb2

Fifty-two weeks, four royal families, one war.

Week one – January 1st – January 7th

Rose (The Two of Clubs) is the youngest of all the Royals of Vanatus, and she has a lot to prove. Born a princess, but with the heart of a warrior, she struggles to keep her two lives separate. By day, a perfect princess, but in the dark of night, she slips out to practice being all she ever wanted to be, a warrior like her brothers. When a dragon kidnaps some children from the royal castle, she must act quickly, but the snap decision sets off a chain of events that lead to the first war in the history of Vanatus, spelling disaster for both her and her family.

Follow the lives and loves of the fifty-two members of The Houses of Club, Heart, Diamond and Spade in real time as they struggle to maintain peace in the world of Vanatus.

This is a New Adult fantasy series set over the course of one whole year. This particular book is the first in the series and is set over the first week from New Year’s Day to 7th January from the eyes of Rose Club. Each book in the series will be shown through the eyes of a different character, all within the world of Vanatus. Each book can be read as a standalone book (no cliffhangers), but the overall arc of the war will play in the background throughout.

excerpt1

I looked down at Tarragon and his lady friend.
The Hearts, Diamonds, and Spades were supposed to be kept to the nicer parts of the castle. No one was supposed to see the kitchens. Not that I suspected the sleeping Heart girl currently wrapped around my elder brother actually cared what the state of the kitchen was. Still, our father, the King, would be upset that someone from one of the other clans had seen that we weren’t the perfect royal family we proclaimed to be and that we did, in fact, have messy kitchens – very messy this morning. Who would get the blame for this? Not Tarragon, that’s for sure. Tarragon was only the Four of Clubs, but he was one of Father’s favourites. I, on the other hand, was the lowliest of all. As the Two of Clubs, I ranked only slightly higher than the mice that sometimes frequented the kitchen despite the hard work of Fluff, the palace cat. And it was I who would get the blame for this.
I glanced at the Heart woman. Usually, you could tell a Heart from the clothes they wore, the most ridiculous ‘high fashion’ which usually consisted of a lot of lace, tulle, feathers and leather, but as I couldn’t see the rest of her, I guessed that she was completely naked under the heap of coats. She was unmistakably a Heart, though. Even with a lack of clothes, I could tell. Red hair fell in waves down the flawless porcelain skin on her naked back. She looked perfect and sensuous in every way, another rather annoying trait of The Hearts. They just didn’t have bad hair days!
“Oy,” I whispered to my wayward brother. The drill-like snoring turned into a grunt so I stuck a toe in his side.
“Wha…? Oh, it’s you!” He actually closed his eyes again, pretending to fall right back asleep. He was in for a shock if he thought I was going to leave him here.
“Will you get her out of here, please? I have to clean the kitchen to get it ready for the cooks.” I might have been the lowest member of the family, but I’d developed into someone my mother described as ‘a wilful child’ and my father called ‘a pain in the ass’. Tarragon knew he had no chance of being left alone with his new plaything.
“What time is it?” He opened his eyes again. His chin was damp with dribble, and he had streamers still weaved through his hair like a multicoloured wig. I couldn’t resist giving him an eye roll.
“It doesn’t matter what time it is. If father catches you with her, there will be hell to pay, and I don’t want to be involved. Why did you bring her down here anyway? She could be a spy.” Unlikely, as she’d actually been invited to the castle along with the rest of her family. And unless The Hearts had a secret desire to learn how much kitchen cleaner we used (not a lot it seemed), then the chances of her being sent down here to spy were slim. Still, Tarragon didn’t need to know that.
“Why do you think I brought her down here? Can you not see her? She’s gorgeous.”
I scowled. His complete disregard for the rules irritated me. It didn’t matter how beautiful the woman was, she was still a Heart and therefore completely untrustworthy. If her father caught them together, well, it didn’t bear thinking about.
“She’s a Heart!” I stated the obvious, knowing that Tarragon was fully aware that she was a Heart, and that was more than likely the reason he’d bedded her in the first place.
“Isn’t this whole party thing to get the clans together so we can cooperate and live in a peaceful land? This is why we all come together at this time of year.” He gave that leisurely grin that women of all races seemed to fall for. It wasn’t going to work on me, though. I was mad!
“Yes, but I don’t think that you are supposed to come together quite so literally!”
“Or quite so many times,” grinned Tarragon.

author-interview1

J.A. Armitage

Featured Book: Two of Clubs

Hi, I’m so excited to be amongst some amazing authors in this box set. It’s like finding myself at a party with Tori Amos providing the music, Jamie Oliver cooking the food, Stephen Fry sat at one side and Jack Black on the other.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I first hit the publish button in January 2014 but I’d spent a whole year writing my first book before that. Nowadays I write much more quickly but back then it was a slow process. It probably didn’t help that I was single parenting two very young children and being a surrogate for a friend. It was a lonely time so I wrote when the kids went to bed. My life is pretty great now and I’ve brought my writing with me into the good times.

How did you come up with this storyline?
I’ve always loved fantasy so it was a no brainer that I’d write fantasy sooner or later. This particular story came to me as more of a concept than a story later. It occurred to me that there are 52 weeks in a year and 52 cards in a pack. One card for each week. I then thought that it would be pretty cool to write a story about the cards. In my book the cards are Royals. This book follows the Two of Clubs as she accidentally starts a war between the four ruling families, The Clubs, The Hearts, The Diamonds and The Spades. Each book is written as a different member of each family. Each book is a stand alone but they follow the arc of the war as it unfolds. Each book has seven chapters – one for each day of the week. Eventually, I hope to have 365 chapters over 52 books!

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
I love writing. I wasn’t much of a writer as a child but I was a voracious reader. I read to escape reality. I write for the same reason but I get to chose what direction the characters go in. The worst part for me is the lack of time. I want to write more and more and more!

What inspires you to write?
Nothing inspires me to write as such. I just have stories rattling around in my head all the time, fighting to get out!

How did you conduct your research for The Two of Clubs (War and Suits book1)?
30 years of reading other author’s work. As it’s a fantasy, I’ve made up a lot of stuff. You’ll meet new creatures and new food and new customs amongst other things.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from The Two of Club?
Thinking about it…

This is my favourite bit:
~ “She’s a Heart!” I stated the obvious, knowing that Tarragon was fully aware that she was a Heart, and that was more
than likely the reason he’d bedded her in the first place.
~ “Isn’t this whole party thing to get the clans together so we can cooperate and live in a peaceful land? This is why we
all come together at this time of year.” He gave that leisurely grin that women of all races seemed to fall for. It wasn’t going to work on me, though. I was
mad!
~ “Yes, but I don’t think that you are supposed to come together quite so literally!”
“Or quite so many times,” grinned Tarragon.

More Favorites from Two of Clubs:
The Heart District is awesome in a steampunky kind of way – I’m not saying any more – You’ll just have to read it.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
I don’t give up. Actually, that’s what I say my best quality is. My friends would probably say my best quality is bringing them cake and wine! (If you can call that a quality!)

Are reader reviews important to you?
My reviews keep me going. It’s amazing just how much some nice words from a complete stranger can pick me up for the rest of the day. They inspire me to keep going.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I’m a graphic designer and wedding photographer as well as a mother. I also renovate houses. My favourite hobby is sleep lol!

Tell us about your other books?
I have a Paranormal Romance series called Guardians of The Light which begins with a girl in a locked room. Her biggest problem isn’t the door, it’s what lies beyond. Talking of locked doors, my next series (The Labyrinthians) features plenty of them in the form of an underground maze with danger lurking around every corner. Finally, I’ve started a Cozy Mystery series (Murder at The Bite Cafe) which I hope to write book 2 in next year once I’ve written the first twelve of The Clubs stories.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I love getting emails oh and I’ve crush on Jack Black…shhh, don’t tell everyone!

Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy the book. If you sign up to my mailing list, I’ll let you know about an exclusive competition I’ll be running throughout the whole series of War and Suits books.

Born in a small town, J. Armitage longed for adventure and travel.
Age 20 she moved to Dublin, then to San Diego, then Sydney and back to California where she did a brief stint working at Universal Studios being a minder to Sponge Bob.

Once back in Britain she got married, had babies and decided to write about the adventure she was now missing out on. She works full time, is a mum to three kids and has had a surrogate baby.

She has skydived twice (and survived), climbed Kilimanjaro and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. She has also worked as a professional clown and banana picker amongst other jobs.

Somehow she finds time to write.

blurb2

They were born to fight.

Created to win.
But the question remains…
Who’s the real enemy?

When Sadie heads out for the night, she hardly expects to witness a murder–much less a murder committed by a dangerous vampire with a thirst for vengeance and destruction. Within a few hours, Sadie and her boyfriend Aaron are pulled into a violent vampire world. Searching for a way to survive, they know they must fight, but this might be a battle they just can’t win.

excerpt1

A door slams open, startling me from my deep sleep. I shiver. It feels like Aaron is brushing a feather over my cheek. Blindly, I pat the side of the bed where he was lying. He’s still there, sleeping.
I don’t feel alone. I don’t think we are… I listen carefully for any foreign sound in the room. There’s a God-awful smell, like something crawled up somewhere and died.
I can hear heavy breathing by the door. There is someone else in our room.
“What the hell?” I try to shove Aaron awake.
I reach for the light, knocking down empty cans on the nightstand. The lights buzz as they
warm up before turning on.
“Aaron!” I scream just as the lights come on and illuminate the horror in front me. My
screams startle Aaron awake.
It’s the man from earlier this evening, the one whose crisp white fangs were dripping with blood. He’s in our room.
He’s here for me.
I’m next.
His eyes burn into my soul as if he’s trying to control me.
“You are mine now,” the intruder says.
“This room is taken,” Aaron says as he rises from the bed and stands with his naked chest puffed out.
He’s just wearing his boxers. I’m wearing his white button-up shirt and my panties. It was the only thing I could find last night without turning on the lights.
“I can see,” the intruder says, raising his eyebrows at me. He rakes back his hair.
“It’s the man from the street!” My voice breaks as I yell. My heart races. I pull my legs up towards me and away from him, my hands trembling.
He cracks his neck sideways, leers at me, and steps forward, his eyes locked on mine, as if he’s an eagle hunting his prey.
“Dude. Get out of our room,” Aaron says angrily.
The man’s attention remains on me.
A bloodcurdling scream rips through the uncomfortable silence of our room. It sounded like it came from the room next door. Who’s in there? What’s happening? The need to get out of this room is overwhelming.
Our intruder smiles at the sound of the scream as if it’s his favorite sound. My body is shaking as if I have been outside all night and the blood in my veins is frozen.
Aaron’s shoulders tense up as he stands in front of the man.
“If you know what’s good for you, you’d leave.” He tries to push the intruder, but before Aaron can touch him, the intruder grips Aaron’s forearms.
My heartbeat races. My heart feels like it’s going to explode. “Get off him.”
With one swift movement of the intruder’s wrist, Aaron is launched through the air. Aaron’s body crashes against a wooden wardrobe; splinters fly out as it crumbles under his weight. The remains of the wardrobe collapse forward, pinning Aaron to the floor. The movement is too quick to process. “Aaron!”
His hand is sticking out. Crimson blood drips down Aaron’s wrist.
The intruder’s head turns towards Aaron’s bloody hand so fast that it looks like his neck could break. His mouth opens, revealing his sharp white fangs. He lazily drags his tongue across his top lip.
This cannot be real. Vampires don’t exist.

H.J. Lawson

Featured Book: New Order

Hello…

Hello, Hayley, welcome. So happy to have you here today, so let’s get started. How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

I’ve been writing for two and a half years. I had a story in my head and just couldn’t get it out of my head. Since that day I’ve had more ideas everyday.

How did you come up with this storyline?

I liked the idea of a new twist on a vampire story, one in which the vampires aren’t the really enemy, but the government is.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?

Best is getting lost in a world, researching new ideas. Worst is all the ideas! I really have too many, I could write a new book every day if I had time.

What inspires you to write?

Readers, I love reading reviews and reading how they enjoyed the adventure that I took them on.

How did you conduct your research for New Order?

I research locations, characters, and vampires.

What would your friends say is your best quality?

That I never give up.

Are reader reviews important to you?

That’s why writers write, to entertainment readers.

What do you do when you don’t write?

I work as a designer, and in my free time hang out with family and like watching movies.

Tell us about your other books? I’ve got a fun adventure time travel series, science fiction, thriller, I have a book for everyone.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?

I’m hoping one day my dreams will come true and I will be a full time author living in Spain, enjoying time with my family.

Thank you so much for sharing a little piece of yourself with our readers and fans. We loved having you here today.

Happy reading.

Thank you

Hayley

Autumn and her boyfriend were on the outs. After six months together, he’d decided they weren’t compatible. Determined to prove him wrong, she agrees to go hiking one October weekend. While she pictured a romantic stroll around the lake, he booked them a grueling weekend in Yellowstone, where he promptly humiliated her, dumped her, and left her all alone in the wilderness. Yet again, she’d fallen for a guy who treated her like a project. All she wanted was love and acceptance. By the time Autumn dried her tears, snowflakes covered the trail, darkness had fallen, and her demise appeared imminent.

Ronan Cormac had some decisions to make. Though he’d become one of the most sought after agents in Hollywood, years of superficial relationships had worn him down, making him long for a meaningful connection. In other words, the wolf shifter was ready for a mate and LA made it impossible for him to find one. When his sister called him home for a family emergency, Ronan rushed back to Yellowstone. In order to save the Druids, his pack, he’d have to find a mate and become the Alpha before the Blood Moon.

excerpt1

I watched as she curled up more, then I lay on her, my warm furry form offering much needed protection from the snow. Still, her teeth chattered. “So cold,” she murmured as she buried her head in my fur. For a moment, I froze. So did she. She glanced at me as if trying to process she’d bedded down with a wolf, then she took my head in her hands and stared me in the eyes. I was struck by how delicate her features were, the smattering of freckles around her nose, her small full lips, and most of all, the intensity of her emerald colored eyes. “Thank you.” She planted a kiss on my cold wet nose.

Then my wolf licked her face. I had nothing to do with it. Somehow, my once fierce beast had become a puppy in her arms.

“Stay with me?” She blinked back a few salty tears.

I would know, since I’d inadvertently tasted them while offering wolf kisses. My wolf whined in response. She must’ve taken it as a sign of agreement. Next thing I knew, she had curled up into me, and wound herself through my legs.

“You don’t mind that I’m fat and ugly, do you boy?” She let out a hollow laugh. “You wouldn’t call me names and abandon me in the wilderness would you?”

My wolf whimpered. Who would ever be cruel to this sweet creature? Her perfume would forever be imprinted on my memory, along with those amazing eyes. As I inhaled the different smells attached to her, I picked up on cat and my ears went back.
“You smell Sir Purr?” She giggled as she ran her hands through my fur like I was some common domesticated beast. Actually, I rather liked it, until I picked up on some other scent. A male. I could feel a growl forming in my throat.

She sighed. “That must be Joel.” She shook her head. “He has that effect on a lot of people. And wolves, too, I guess.”

Now I had a name and a scent. Joel was in pretty big trouble when I met up with him. I caught her yawning and laid my head on hers to encourage her to sleep. She was safe now. The elements were no longer a threat. If I had my way, Joel wouldn’t be, either.

Featured Book: Blood Moon

Hullo! Care for a spot of tea? Sorry, I’ve been watching a lot of Penny Dreadful on Netflix in preparation for my next series. Okay. Never mind. I watch it because it’s dark and different and every once in awhile I need some downtime.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
Well, I first published in June of 2013. Inspired by the success of Fifty Shades of Grey, I wrote the naughtiest story I could think up. Sin at Sea spawned The Sinful Series, and I was hooked on the whole process.

How did you come up with this storyline?
While scrolling through Facebook one day, there was a video about wolves returning to Yellowstone. The wheels started turning. What if they weren’t really wolves, but wol fshifters who saved the park? The Druids were born.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
I love coming up with the story ideas. The hardest part is working through all the plot holes to make the story work.

What inspires you to write?
I have to. Seriously. If I take too much time off from writing, I feel it. Writing keeps me balanced. It has become part of my identity. Some people exercise, I write. If I didn’t write, I’d eat more. No one wants that.

How did you conduct your research for Blood Moon?
I watched videos, I surfed the net. Good times.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
My sense of adventure. Okay…I love to travel. Is that the same thing?

Are reader reviews important to you?
Reviews are everything. I’m lucky to have built a really wonderful tribe named Emma’s Elite. I share a FREE book every week. They read and review. I recently published a book they helped create through a series of polls.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I’m all about some travel. I prefer cruises, which is why my first book was set on a cruise ship and the rest of the series were all destination romances. In fact, I’m eyeing a 10-day cruise in May.

Tell us about your other books.
As of today, I have four series and five standalones. They’re a variety of genres, like romantic comedy, romantic suspense, paranormal, and contemporary romance. The settings vary, although most of my recent stuff is set in Charlotte, North Carolina, where I live, and the surrounding areas. I write about whatever interests me at the time and try to create characters readers can relate to.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know, what would it be?
Chocolate should be a food group. White chocolate is blasphemy. My life should have more wine in it.

Thank you for hanging out with me today. I usually have these conversations over sushi, so I’m going to go get some now. No reason for both of us to miss out. Have a wonderful day!

What made her decide to be an romance author?

Simple.

How else was she going to parlay her two favorite past times into a career?

Emma is single and loving it. Like her first character, Alysin, Sin for short, she doesn’t believe in settling or in settling down. She loves to indulge in her passions whenever the mood strikes and enjoys keeping all of life’s cliche moments spicy.

Known for her sense of humor, Emma surrounds herself with friends whose antics often become the source of book fodder. Her ideal situation would be to explore the Caribbean while writing. She pursues that dream daily.

blurb2

Curvy beach babe Alessa Kokinos has scored the perfect life at the Yucatán’s hottest island resort. She has a dream job caring for ocean wildlife, and every spring, her best friend, Dante, returns to the island as a surf instructor. The only thing that could make her happier would be if he finally realized how much he means to her.

Dante isn’t the typical human Alessa believes him to be. He’s a hippocampus, a water horse shifter from the Mediterranean. Each year, his herd migrates back to the island to feed and bear their young in the tranquil turquoise waters. There is no safer place in all the world for the hippocampi – but for Dante, time is running out.

excerpt1

Author Note: Dante has never watched his friend Alessa perform in the mermaid tank. In this scene, he arrives and realizes something is changing about their relationship.

Desire hit me hard and fast, a sudden freight train sweeping away my common sense and ability to reason.

Alessa is my friend, I repeated while approaching the glass to stare at her. As I watched her perform for the crowd I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She twisted and turned through the water, a beautiful sea nymph who enchanted the younger viewers and enraptured the adult males.

I didn’t want them watching her. Hot jealousy washed through me followed by the urge to charge all the leering men in the room. My wild, animalistic instinct called for me to drive off the other male contenders. Only then, could I dive into the tank to claim my mate.

Whoa. The reckless path my thoughts took made me step back. It’s Alessa. This can’t be right. She’s a human.

Vivienne Savage

Featured Book: Making Waves

Hey, everyone, I’m Vivienne, or Vivi if you prefer. I’m happy to answer your burning questions about my work.

Hello, Vivi!! It is great having you join us! How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve been writing professionally for about 3 years now. Wow, that time has flown by. Before that, though, I would write for fun. Stuff that should probably never see the light of day, if I could ever find it.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
The best is really getting to put my ideas and thoughts out there in a tangible way. I get to share my stories and most of the time, people to seem to love them. As for the worst, I’d have to say marketing. It takes up a lot of time – time that I could be using to write instead of filling out endless forms. A necessary evil, I’m afraid.

What inspires you to write?
Life. Things that have happened to me, whether with my family, friends, or while attending school or work. I have friends, too, who will tell me a funny story about what their significant other did. After we’re done laughing I’ll ask if I can use that for a character.

How did you come up with this storyline?
You know what, I don’t remember exactly what inspired Making Waves. I wanted to show more supernatural creatures in the world than what you normally see, and I was bored with the usual bears and wolves. So I got to thinking about mermaids and water horses, which led to a fun, beachy read.

Eventually, I want to do an entire series of mythological beings like unicorns and phoenixes.

How did you conduct your research for Making Waves?
I watched a few documentaries on deep sea research and marine biology. One of my children is a Nat Geo lover, so we spent hours watching videos about ocean life and the food chain. Between that and movies like Happy Feet, I cobbled together my own ideas. By the way, if you’re a David Tennant fan, I recommend Dolphins: Spy in the Pod. He narrates the entire thing for the BBC and his voice is ear-sex.

What is one of your favorite funny scenes from Making Waves?
In this scene, my heroine Alessa is convincing her boss to expand the resort’s mermaid attraction by including men. I love this scene because the resort owner is actually a dragon shifter, and they love money.

“If you really want to expand the attraction, you’ll have Kekoa or one of the other hot guys squeezing into a tail. The ladies want mermen. We want rippling abs and Adonis belts on display while hot guys perform their best Michael Phelps impressions.”
Teo rubbed his chin, his eyes lighting up with interest.
Bingo. The girls were going to owe me for this one.
“Teo, do not listen to her. No one wants to see me in a merman tail,” Kekoa disagreed.
“Rippling abs, Teo. Think of how Marcy loves to touch yours. Think of the Return on Investment as needy women hemorrhage money to see his pecs.”
I stole a glance at Kekoa to find him glowering at me. “I win,” I mouthed to him.
No one could change a dragon’s mind once money was involved.

Are reader reviews important to you?
Reviews are important to every author. Not just so we can qualify for certain promotions or get better views on retailers, but because they also help me improve. I will go through my bad reviews and make a serious effort to improve where they say I’m weak.

What do you do when you don’t write?
What’s free time? Kidding. I spend time with my kids, play with my pet menagerie (I have two dogs, guinea pigs, a pair of geckos, and a conure who might as well be a toddler), read, and play video games.

Tell us about your other books?
I started off with dragon shifters and they’ve quickly become a beloved series. In fact, my newest title – Crush- released today (9/28). Pssssst, go get it!! I also have a trio of books featuring some sexy military vets who are shifters in the same world as my dragons. Sometime this year I hope to get the next Wild Ops novel written. It will feature Sasha, who is a lioness shifter. Also in the same world, I have werewolves, witches, and other mythological creatures. You get to meet my hippocampi in Making Waves, as well as a cameo from a dragon or two.

Thank you so much for sticking with me. Readers really are why I write and publish. If you
want to know more about me and follow my books, you’re welcome to join my
readers group on Facebook – Vivienne’s Sirens

blurb2

This is the day Dorothea Landry dreamed of…

Fresh out of high school and stalling on college, all she wants is a little freedom.

So when she’s offered the opportunity to move into her grandmother’s old house in Black Cat Springs, she simply can’t refuse the deal. Cheap rent and distance from her parents is exactly what she’s always wanted…and a handsome new neighbor seals the deal.

But as soon as she moves to Black Cat Springs, she’s immediately drawn to a mysterious fence in the woods, and despite her better judgement and the dark legends surrounding it, she sneaks inside, learning that some things from her past are better left contained…

A twisted town with a mind boggling past is about to become Dorothea’s future. And whatever she does, one thing is certain—she cannot trust her instincts.

excerpt1

My dream from last night floated through my mind, the details becoming foggier…
At the bottom of the hill, I was surprised to see someone in the cemetery. Until now, I hadn’t paid much attention to the old graves, assuming most of its residents had died hundreds of years ago, based on how crumbled and weathered the tombstones were. The mysterious woman was kneeling on the soft dying grass, facing one of the small headstones. Her back to me, she looked stoic, almost like a part of the graveyard itself.
I slowed my pace, determined not to interrupt her as I passed. Off to the right, I spotted the same old farm road from the other day, and I picked up speed, enjoying the hot wet vibrations of the wind passing by. As I turned sharply, I took one last look back toward the cemetery. Expecting to see the stone-like woman, I was surprised to see her gone already.
She must live close by, I wondered, focusing back ahead.
Like I did a couple of days ago, I veered off the beaten path and slipped through the gap in the trees that led to the fence line.
My eyes traveled the length of its wires as I jogged in place, noting that the fence was twisted and bent in spots. Instead of running in the direction of town like I did the other day, I took a new route, going the opposite direction.
I’ll just follow the fence until it ends so I can see where it goes, I decided resolutely. It was silly and childish, but I suddenly felt this insatiable need to satisfy the curiosity burning inside me…and as I ran, I could feel the same high from last night returning. The touch and smell of Adam still clung to my skin…
Moving along the fence line, I tried to catch a glimpse of something behind the foliage, or the lake I thought I’d seen the other day, but after jogging nearly a mile, it was more of the same. I was in the middle of nowhere now. Peering up through the clearing, I could see a dirt road with no houses on it. Suddenly anxious, I stopped and listened. Would I hear that dog beyond the fence again? I’d almost forgotten about the barking… But I couldn’t hear anything besides the rustling of wind in the trees and the slight clinking sounds of the fence rattling.
A shockingly cold gust of wind blew right through my sweat-soaked hair, causing me to shiver. What had started out as a bright sunny day, was suddenly getting colder…and darker. The fence seemed to stretch for miles, and I was suddenly hit with a strange sense akin to walking in the desert. Is that the end of the fence line I see? Or is this some sort of twisted mirage?
But as I moved against the dank and chilly air, I saw what did in fact look like the end of the fence line. The fence itself curled around, moving in another direction. One spot in the fence looked open. It was shaking in the wind, the culprit of the clinking sounds I’d heard only moments earlier…
All of a sudden, I was running, eager to see. As I reached the corner where the fence turned, I realized it was loose. There was a tiny gap at the end, a jagged opening that looked to have been created by someone. A hole in the elusive fence. How can I resist going through it? The adult in me was sounding alarm bells, but the kid in me couldn’t resist…
The gap in the fence was more like a tear, and before I could change my mind, I did a quick look around to make sure I was alone, and then I tried to squeeze through the gap. The metal wires were jagged in spots, and even sucking in my small belly, I barely made it
through. The wires tore at my arms and torso, and once through, I stopped to observe my wounds, catching my breath. They were superficial, but bleeding. Thoughts of tetanus drifted through my mind, but I quickly tried to dispel them, using my shirt itself to wipe blood away from the tiny scratches.
On this side of the fence there was thick vegetation. Impulsively, I pushed through it, trying to stay as quiet as possible. I don’t see any ‘No Trespassing’ signs, but the fence made it very clear…I’m not supposed to be back here.
Sharp pointy sticks and roots clustered the dry earthy ground, so I took my time, pushing through the trees and prickly bushes. There was no sound; no birds, no nothing, as I entered the dense forest. Even the fence had stopped rattling behind me.
Hesitantly, I looked back in the direction of the fence, but couldn’t see it now through the murky wall of trees behind me I’d just passed through.
Darting forward through trees and overturned logs, I prayed that I wouldn’t get lost. I felt compelled to keep going, to see what lie ahead that was so important it had to be fenced in and kept secret like Fort Knox…
My heart nearly burst with relief as I saw the trees widening. I was approaching something…but what that something was, I couldn’t be certain.
But that’s when I heard it—soft babbling sounds of a creek or water source. Was this the water I spotted through the trees the other day?
Off to my right, the sound of water quickened, and I followed it like a beacon. A few yards later, I nearly stepped right up to the edge of the lake as it seemed to appear out of nowhere. Abruptly remembering my dream from last night, I recognized the same bright white blue water. Mist hovered like a blanket above it.
Standing at the water’s edge, I could see clear across to the other side of the lake. There were triangular shaped hills in the distance and a thick white fog hovering around them. I followed along the edge, my eyes immediately drawn to smooth white marble and stone, a building or monument of some sort standing in the distance. For a brief moment, I considered turning back…but I’d come this far. I had to see what else there was back here…
Nervously, I moved toward the stone building, and as I grew closer, I realized it had crumbling steps leading up to a flat empty square of space. Stealing up nearly three dozen stone steps, I went to the center of it, turning around in circles on the flat stone surface.
There were no picnic tables or statues, just an open gazebo-like platform. I didn’t shout, but I know if I did, my voice would have echoed for miles…
“Neat,” I said, feeling like I’d found my own treasure. I went back to the steps, plopping down on the top stair. From here, I could see the brilliant blue lake below, and although I was still not as high as the trees, I could see farther across the expanse of land on the other side of the lake. A massive gnarly twisted tree stood out from all the rest. Even from this far away, I could see that it dwarfed every other tree and plant around it.
It looked wicked cool, with massive long branches pointing in every direction. Nobody lives here. There are no houses. But someone must own this property. I wonder why they let it go…
“Miss?” The voice out here was so abrupt and shocking, that I screamed and jumped up, nearly tumbling down the high stony stairway.
I looked behind me toward the sound of the voice, surprised to see a boy standing on the flat square surface above. His head tilted to the side, taking in all of my features, as though he was trying to figure me out.
“I-I’m sorry,” I stammered. “I didn’t know anyone was back h-here. You frightened me.”
“I didn’t know you were here either,” he said, his voice as a low as a whisper. His skin was white as milk, his hair and eyes nearly matching the shocking bright blue of the lake. If it wasn’t for the hollowed out cheeks and deep purplish marks beneath his eyes, he would have looked exquisite.
“I’m leaving. I just…needed to see what was back here.”
I stumbled a few steps forward, looking back at the boy.
“And now that you have, what do you think? Is it all that you expected?” His voice was so strange, as was his question, and I found myself getting scared. I was suddenly aware of how alone I was. He walked toward me, his feet silent. I realized he wasn’t wearing any shoes. His clothes were odd as well, faded dark cloth pants and a matching black shirt that looked homemade.
“Again, I’m sorry,” I muttered, jogging back down the steps, eager to leave.
“Wait,” said the man, who really was just a boy, my age or slightly younger. When I glanced back, his expression was sad now, as though I’d disappointed him.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” Even though he was standing no more than ten feet away, his words vibrated against my skin. The question reminded me of Adam’s question the other day, and I felt my insides constrict.
“No. We’ve never met, I’m sure of that.” I’d never been so sure of anything…
“But that isn’t so.” He was smiling now, a secret curling up the edges of his lips, his words melodic.
Still moving down the steps, I was eager to get away from this stranger. A stranger who claims to know you, I reminded myself.
“N-no, I just moved here…I don’t know you…”
He was standing at the very top of the stone platform, his bare feet lined up with the edge. From here, he looked eight feet tall…and intimidating.
“I know you, Dorothea Landry. I always have.”
And with that, I was running, suddenly scared of the boy. I raced down the steps and back along the water’s edge, careful not to slip in, and when I found a decent-sized gap in the trees, I darted through. How did he know my name? That question pierced through my mind over and over as I ran. Fearful I wouldn’t find my way back to the fence, you can imagine my relief a few moments later, when I saw the glint of metal up ahead.
“Oh, thank God,” I cried, pressing my face and hands to the twisted metal. Keeping my hand on the fence, I followed it east, until I found the same jagged hole I came in through. I wiggled through hole, faster this time, and screeched as the metal tore straight through my shirt, slicing a deep cut in my belly.

But as soon as I was out, I kept running, looking back over my shoulder a few times for the boy. But he wasn’t there, and for that, I was grateful…

Carissa Ann Lynch

Featured Book: Midnight Moss

Hi, guys! I’m Carissa Ann Lynch, author of the Flocksdale Files trilogy, Horror High series, 13: An Anthology of Horror and Dark Fiction, Grayson’s Ridge, and This Is Not About Love. I like to write what I like to read—which is a little bit of everything!

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve always been obsessed with books, but I didn’t write my first complete novel until about five years ago. I couldn’t find a book to read, so I got this crazy idea—why not try to write my own story? It was harder than I thought, but I fell in love with the idea of being able to control the outcome of a story. It felt like reading, only I got to decide what happened next. I never expected to get a publishing contract, but once I did, there was no going back. I was hooked!

How did you come up with this storyline for Midnight Moss?
This story combines several ideas that have been rolling around in my head for a while. As a child, there was this section of our neighborhood that was mysteriously fenced off, so that’s where the “mysterious fence” comes into play. I also love the idea of old houses and magic keys, so I was able to use that in the story as well. I usually write horror and dark fiction, but I have a serious love for fantasy and paranormal stories, so this book was so much fun to write.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
The best thing about writing is it’s like a drug for me. When I do it, I feel better. And as soon as I’m finished with one book, I’m ready to go looking for my next story idea, or “fix”. I can see that as being a good and bad thing. I get obsessed with a story while I’m writing, and I work on it compulsively. So, it can be a pretty exhausting process for me.

What inspires you to write?
Everything! Most writers will tell you that everything we see/hear/feel gets stored away in our memory banks to use later for our books. I like to write about serious social issues, but I also enjoy the escape of a magical story and light fun.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
I commit to things and do them all the way. I’m also loyal and I have a good memory, so I usually remember birthdays and old stories LOL.

Are reader reviews important to you?
I love when someone tells me that one of my books affected them, or made their day a little brighter. But I try not to get upset over bad reviews, and I don’t change my stories based on what readers want. I just write what I want to write, and hope that people will like it. But if not, that’s their choice. As a book lover myself, I know that some books everyone claims to love aren’t my favorite. I know I can’t be everyone’s favorite all of the time, and I’m okay with that.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I read A LOT. I prefer paperbacks and I always—ALWAYS—have a book with me everywhere I go. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t fall asleep with a book on my chest.

Tell us about your other books?
The Flocksdale Files is a dark trilogy about a twisted town filled with the worst kind of monsters—the humankind. The Horror High series is a three-book series about a creepy school nicknamed “Horror High” where the cheerleaders are constantly being taunted by
an unknown “sociopath.” My other books are women’s fiction, mystery, and paranormal.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I would just tell them thank you. The fact that they took the time to read my book makes my heart soar, and means more to me than I could put into words.

That’s it for me, guys! I sincerely hope that you enjoy Midnight Moss as much as I enjoyed writing it!

SHADE: Girl on a hero’s journey, going from smart-ass to badass.

Thanks to her offbeat mother, Shade’s full name is Galactic Shade Griffin. Having a name like that while being the new girl in school is pretty much catnip for bullies. The summer before Shade’s junior year of high school, her mother breaks up with yet another boyfriend and moves them once again to a new town.

This time, they move into a dilapidated old house where Shade has an entire attic bedroom to herself—at least until she discovers it’s haunted by the ghost of a teenaged boy named Brandon Yates. When Shade’s best friend goes missing, her life becomes even more complicated. With the help of Brandon who’s struggling with his own issues in the world beyond, Shade faces the question of whether or not she has what it takes to become a true hero.

Although this novel deals with a number of serious issues—drug and alcohol abuse, cutting, and disturbing world events—it’s primarily a novel about a teenaged girl finding out who she
really is and that she’s capable of so much more than she ever thought possible.

SHADE is a YA Paranormal Mystery novel.

excerpt1

Shade and her friends interviewing Gabriella Underwood, a local psychic, at her home in the YA Paranormal Mystery novel, Shade, by Marilyn Peake.

George started. “How long have you been a psychic?”

Lame! Lame! Lame! I wanted to crack myself over the head with the walking stick leaning
against the wall next to the fireplace.

Gabriella Underwood had grace and style. She answered, as though honored to be interviewed, “I’m not sure, exactly. I think I was born a psychic or came into it at a very young age. I didn’t know what it was, though, or had any sense of its power, until puberty.” She laughed. “Isn’t that the way for all of us, though? Innate forces move within us and make their grand entrance at puberty. Then it’s up to us to make sense of them and become the people we were meant to be.”

At the mere mention of the word puberty, I blushed a million shades of color, I’m sure, running the entire spectrum from pink to crimson red. I looked over at the flames roaring in the fireplace. I didn’t look up to see if George and Kailee had also reacted with embarrassment and shame. Yeah, seriously, me as an old soul? I couldn’t even hear the word puberty without thinking about sex and blushing in shame.

Gabriella continued as though nothing were amiss. “At three years old, I had a frightening dream that my grandfather had died. The next day, my grandfather passed away. When I was four years old, I fell into a daydream and imagined that my mother had taken ill. The following week, my mother found out that she was pregnant. It was a rough pregnancy and in the last few months of it, she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. It haunted me as a child that maybe I had caused the death of my grandfather and the illness of my mother that could have affected the birth of my baby sister. But I always tucked the fear in the back of my brain and told myself it was all just a coincidence.” She paused. Took a sip of hot chocolate. “Oh my, that’s good chocolate. A friend in Europe sent it to me.” Another sip. “But then, when I was around thirteen years of age, I started ‘seeing’ all kinds of things before they happened. Also, details about things after they happened, details that no one else knew about. I saw a vague mark on my best friend’s forehead that no one else could see. It was kind of like a black smudge, kind of like the ash that Catholics get on their heads before Lent. No one else could see it. Seven months later, Sophie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.” Gabriella stopped speaking for a moment and looked away, lost to memory. She returned her gaze to ours and smiled weakly. “It took me years to recognize that what I had was a gift. But a gift without a voice. As long as I was frightened by it and refused to give it voice, I could help no one. If I could find my voice, however, I might be able to inform people of things I could see that would help them.”

Kailee asked the next question, “When did you come out?” She blushed. “I mean, when did you come out as a psychic?”

Gabriella beamed. “Coming out is a great way to phrase that! I got teased so much as a kid just for being different and for having the strange name of Gabriella Underwood, you have to believe I was scared to death to tell people I could tell the future. When I finally did, it was an act of coming out about who I really was.”

I had found a kindred spirit, weird name and all. Although I have to admit, compared to Galactic Shade Griffin, I thought of Gabriella Underwood as a completely normal name—not as American-flag-and-apple-pie as Mary Jane Smith, mind you, but not anywhere near as freakish as the odd name foisted upon me.

Gabriella continued, “Years later, when I was eighteen years old and coming into full possession of my powers, something happened that finally convinced me I had to stop hiding what I had.” Gabriella stood up. She added a few more logs to the fireplace. She stirred the ashes.

Marilyn Peake

Featured Book: Shade

Hi, everyone! I’m so happy to be here!

So glad to have you join us, Marilyn. Let’s get right to it! How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I started writing seriously in high school. Back then, I wrote poems and short stories. I also wrote articles for three local newspapers and had some poetry published there. When I was in graduate school, I actually enjoyed writing my thesis. In 2002, I published my first novel, a children’s fantasy adventure novel titled THE FISHERMAN’S SON.

How did you come up with this storyline?
For my YA Paranormal Mystery novel, SHADE, which is my book in the Dark Legends Collection, I first came up with the main character, Shade. I really like her. She’s spunky and brave. When her very difficult and chaotic mother moves them to an old rundown Victorian house, I knew there would be a ghost there. That happens early on in the story. I outlined the novel before starting to write, so I also knew what the major mystery in the story would be and why it was important to the ghost to help Shade solve it.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
The best aspects are creating new worlds and storytelling, sharing those stories with readers and hearing from readers who enjoyed them. The worst aspects all involve sitting for too many hours and pushing myself too hard – not exactly recommended by health experts and it’s not great for one’s social life.

What inspires you to write?
Really great books, movies and TV shows. Those always inspire me and get me excited about writing my own stories.

How did you conduct your research for SHADE?
I Googled articles on quite a few subjects from ghosts to psychics to criminal investigations.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from SHADE?

“Once class started, I only got called on once, to answer a question about why Romeo and Juliet had pretended to die. That was easy. We had discussed Romeo and Juliet a little bit the previous year at my old school…and, well, duh, because the adults in their lives wouldn’t let them be who they really were and date who they really loved, and they had to let everyone think they were dead so that they could sneak away, be themselves, follow their hearts’ desires and have no one look for them.”

“Brandon [ghost who had died in the 1970s] discovered that he loved a cell phone trivia game based on facts about the 1970s. He also found Angry Birds seriously addicting. After twenty games of snorting piggies, I made him turn the sound down. Then I taught him how to mute the phone. He unmuted it, said the game wasn’t the same without the sounds. Well, he got that right. It definitely wasn’t.”

Shade talking about her mom:

“And there it was, once again. Hanging in the air like invisible poisoned fruit, waiting to be plucked from the tree and discussed. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant…with me…so
young, life would have been better. She would have been a great success.

“Sure.

“And monkeys would have grown wings.

“And world peace would have been achieved.”

More Favorites from SHADE:

The tagline for SHADE is: Shade: Girl on a hero’s journey, going from smart-ass to badass.

Shade’s mom was always embarrassing her. I love Shade’s snarky sense of humor. Here’s one of her comments I especially got a kick out of because her snark clearly shows through: “The next day, I remembered just how truly lucky I was. My mom drove me to school in her rusty old van. She was wearing some kind of hippie dress that reached down to her ankles. It was, honest to God, made out of bright yellow cloth covered in purple tulips with neon-green leaves, and she had painted her lips fire engine red and rubbed purple eye shadow all over her eyelids.”

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about SHADE?
Yes. SHADE deals with some very serious subjects, so I include a warning in the book description. Here’s the Book Summary:

Finalist Award in the 2015 National Indie Excellence Book Awards, Young Adult Fiction Category.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
My enthusiasm.

Are reader reviews important to you?
Yes, they really are.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I love hiking, traveling and photography. One of my favorite things to do is travel photography. I also love spending time with my husband and grown sons. Recently, I discovered the computer game, NO MAN’S SKY. (I have 10,000,000 credits in that game!) I also enjoy reading books and watching movies and TV
shows.

Tell us about your other books?
Altogether, I have 31 publications, mostly Science Fiction and Fantasy. That includes novels, novellas, novelettes, short stories and a couple of nonfiction books. My most recent books that I’m really proud of are my MUTATION Z Apocalyptic Zombie series and my SHADE series. When the SHADE series is complete, it will have six books.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
That it means a lot to me when readers enjoy my books and I love hearing from readers.

I really enjoyed this interview! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

I did! It was a pleasure getting to know you better!! Good luck with the new release.
