excerpt1

“The Dream”

She looked around the foyer, awestruck. The large ceremonial foyer was big enough for use as a reception hall—perhaps it had been used as such in the glory days of the Island. It was at least two stories high, built of stone with exposed beams of timber and log, and large hand-hewn cross trusses at the ceiling. It was rustic but grand at the same time. There were three matching chandeliers of iron and crystal suspended from the massive trussed ceiling. The floors were all of six-inch antique lumber, polished to a brilliant shine in the setting sunlight. For its size, the massive foyer was warm, surprisingly warm and cozy.

Emily felt quite welcome.

On the walls were wrought-iron fluted sconces matching the chandeliers at equidistance throughout the hallway, lovely hand-woven tapestries and paintings of some family members Emily recognized. But there were also paintings of others she did not recognize. Hung in the parlor, over the considerable stone fireplace where a fire blazed pleasantly and in full view from the foyer, was the most prominent of paintings. Clearly, it had been
her uncle’s favorite.

The painting was of a voluptuous young beauty with long auburn locks, tied loosely with a pale pink ribbon. Wisps of her hair escaped the tether and fell rather seductively about her soft shapely shoulders and around the tempting ivory flesh of her exposed bosom. She appeared to be sitting quite privately by her vanity, tending to her feminine indulgences perhaps applying oils and lotions to her pale, velvety skin. Draped in a pink satin cloth or robe of sorts, she was not completely nude. She was an extraordinary creature and, immediately, Emily thought of the Mariner’s Maiden. There was such a likeness, but Emily thought that was quite an impossible coincidence. She wondered whom this young woman was that held such a position of importance in her uncle’s home. She also wondered if she had ever lived or if she was still alive. Were they lovers? She was sure there would be much
about her uncle she would discover in the coming days and never grow to understand. She was ashamed to admit to herself she was now more fascinated by him in death. Emily was excited to discover more about him—and his life—now she was here, than she had been while he was alive.

She looked closely at the painting and in faint letters it read, “Amalya” at the bottom. She wondered if that was the beautiful woman or the artist. Although quite taken with the portrait, she had satisfied some measure of her curiosity for the day and, thinking of her father, snapped around, squared her shoulders and settled into her uncle’s desk to begin work. Opening her uncle’s file drawer in his desk, Emily felt intrusive. However, it had to be done. The first file which caught her eye was one on Mariner’s Maiden. She pulled it out, opened the cover and began to read. There were plat maps, surveys, contracts of sale and purchase, title documents, recordings and the usual. There was the technical history, but nothing of the emotional history, which interested her most. Emily read on, as the file was very thick, and perhaps there was more to come. She moved to the leather sofa in the library in between the bookcases and across from the stone fireplace.

The original owner had built the house on five hundred acres of land in the early 1800’s. The technical file was so thick because over the years, as he aged and his family moved away, he had donated much of the land to the town. The hours passed. She read until she fell asleep to the melodious crackling sounds of the fire. Emily was nestled under the throw quite warm and secure. And then, she dreamed…she was floating, soaring, drifting on silken currents and airfoils of magic.

She felt as though she was flying, so light and airy, wispy, so delicate. She could see the land from on high. She could see a young woman with very long auburn hair being chased towards the house by a large male. He was dressed in odd attire, with his pant legs tucked inside his high-topped black polished boots. He was tall, but with his back to her, Emily could not make out his face. His shoulders were broad and his waist narrowed, but flared to thick muscular thighs that moved deliberately under tight leggings. He wore a white billowy shirt, so very bright white, Emily had to squint to block the glare and the scene was out of focus at all the edges. The woman was dressed in a long blue skirt, to the ankles. A wide belt cinched her tiny waist, holding her full white blouse tucked neatly in the band. Off both of her shoulders was the top of the blouse and the sleeves were nipped tight at the wrist. She ran quickly to the front door of the house, looking over her shoulder frequently. The man, who had long masterful strides, easily caught her at the front entrance to the house. Even though it was a dream, Emily felt her heart pounding for the young girl in fear for her safety.

When the stranger grabbed her from behind at the grand oak door, Emily held an involuntary breath anticipating the worst as the man whipped the young woman around to face him. She laughed, loud and hearty, and threw her arms around the laughing, breathless man. They faced one another, and Emily could not make out their features, the glare from the white shirts was still so blinding. The man ran his hand through her hair from her neck up to the back of her head, grabbed a fistful of tousled auburn locks and pulled her face gently towards his. He kissed her with such deep, passionate abandon, Emily gasped. She awoke, abruptly but briefly, to realize she had been holding her breath with a racing heart. Calming herself, breathing evenly, she closed her eyes to return to the dream.

Emily slept again almost immediately.

The couple was inside the house. The man collected the young woman in his arms in the foyer and carried her to the library. In one another’s embrace, he took her to the couch, exactly where Emily now slept, and gently placed her down onto the sofa. He lowered the top of her blouse further down her bodice, exposing her breasts from an uplifting corset which barely covered her nipples. As he bent to draw her breasts out of the confines and kiss each one, Emily saw the young woman had put her arm over her eyes, so Emily still could not see the fullness of her face. The man lovingly took each nipple, one at a time, into his mouth while he twisted and pinched the other. Her areolas responded by swelling and darkening around the hardened nipples. She moaned and moved suggestively, openly welcoming further indulgences. He reveled in her breasts, burying his face between them and licking the private spot of cleavage reserved just for his attentions. The room smelled of lavender, Emily noted in her dream. The young woman surely fancied the lavender fragrance in her evening bathwater.

It was very stimulating and seemed so real to Emily.

Muffy Wilson

Featured Book: The Para-Portage of Emily

Thank you so much for inviting me here today. You know, the longer and more that I do interviews, it never gets easier to talk about myself. I think writers are inherently private, why? I don’t know, because everything we write is revealing in some way. But, I love talking about my books and characters, so I guess, someday, I’ll get used to talking about myself too!

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
In many respects, I have written most of my life. I was in sales and marketing before I retired and I had to write proposals, proformas, presentations, contracts, and employee reviews so I had to have some command of the English language. It was only after I started writing provocative romance that I realized how little command I actually have!! But, I started in earnest, writing stories and books, in 2010. My first story, The Storm, was published in 2010 by Oysters & Chocolate, an online magazine now defunct. The $10 I earned made me a pro, but just a writer, not an author! I hope that isn’t a sign of things to come!

How did you come up with this story?
I wrote a very short workshop teaser, The Bath, for a group I am in in which the woman bathing dozes and feels hands on her, soothing her tired muscles and becoming more insistent, erotically. She gives herself over to the sensations and then as she drains the tub thinks she sees a face in the water. It was the beginning or a romance that spans a century about a seafaring man that keeps returning to his home to try to find his beloved, Amalya who died in childbirth. He mistakenly thinks that Emily, now in his home, is she. That is how this all started and these two characters literally swept me away.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
As always, the agony of a blank page and the ecstasy of two little words, “The End”. In all fairness, writing is a solitary endeavor, so the loneliness gets to me occasionally, but I have taken to the couch and write beside my husband as he does his crossword puzzles and watches sports. And I have my characters to keep me company.

What inspires you to write?
I know writers always say ‘everything’ but for me, that really isn’t true. A melody might, something that happened to me in my life, someone, or something I saw. Once, on the day that JFK was assassinated, my Mother and I were shopping in Paris. My Dad was an Air Force colonel and we were stationed there for three years, but that is another story in and of itself! Anyway, I saw a man strike a woman across the Champs Elysees in front of the Arc de Triomphe. The ‘City of Love’ changed for me forever in that one moment. Things like that inspire me. Politics, for example, do not — so everything is not inspiring to me. I suspect, to sum it up, the human condition is fascinating to me; how people treat and react to one another at their best and worst, is inspiring.

How did you conduct your research for The Para-Portage of Emily?
Humm, I really didn’t. This is another time when much of what I wrote, I lived. The same is true of Moonbeams of Unintended Consequences, although not all, for sure. But, the setting in The Para-Postage of Emily, is on an island between Lake Michigan and Green Bay. For many years, my husband and I lived on an Island in the middle between both of those bodies of water and the ferry had to cross “Death’s Door, so named by the Indians because of the treacherous currents. It is a small 36 square mile island settled by Nordic settlers many generations ago so many of the current residents are related. Small Island, big gossip! Anyway, we lived there for nearly 20 years. That is where this story takes place, in a small part of my heart.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from The Para-Portage of Emily?
~
Will they face eternity together or love in secret as dark things are to be loved between the shadows and the soul?

~
Death lures her into the arms of the shadows seduction created by the flickering light and dark shadows.

~ And
the last is in the Epilogue spoken by Colin:

You’ll wake when the sun slices
through your window to kiss your cheek so fair,
I’ll be there beside you, as I
have year after year after year.
Our love is locked in passion
grown old along with us.
Our hearts are woven as
one—unbreakable—shored by love and trust.
We have faced each day together,
even triumphed before we’ve begun.
The battles we have faced and
fought are battles we have done and won.
If we should leave tomorrow, and
that tomorrow will surely come,
I’ll take with me your sorrow and
embrace you warmed by our morning sun.
And though we were so far apart,
by years and tears so cruel
You were always in my
heart. I was never meant to miss you.
Come with me, Amalya.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
I am a good friend; I think they would say. I hope they would anyway. I try to be helpful and supportive. It is so hard to be a writer today. There are 55,000 new books published monthly. Anyone can write and publish a book. I can be very discouraging for an author to be read and, as you know, promotion is time consuming and exhausting leaving little time to do what you love. I try to do whatever I can to help my friends. I try to be generous with my time and whatever talent I possess that might be useful to them.

Are reader reviews important to you?
Reader reviews are very important to me. Positive reinforcement is essential to my life-force. It is like getting all dressed up for a party looking your best, and no one notices if I don’t get reviews. And it is crushing. You know, shameless self-promotion only goes so far, and that’s usually with your family! As in anything, word of mouth is the best form of advertising—and so it goes with books. Oddly enough, while I don’t particularly care for average reviews, they do not bother me. You cannot please everyone and one really never knows a reader’s points of reference. Anyway, I am harder on my work than anyone else
could ever be.

What do you do when you don’t write?
My husband and I used to boat, but we lost interest when gas prices went so high. We had a 28’ Grady White. Beautiful boat. But we could eat lobster every day for what it cost us to go fishing in the Gulf a few times a month! That takes all the fun out of a hobby. I walk a lot as, like Emily, I have a wee Havanese dog of 12 fluffy pounds and I sew. I am also a licensed realtor, although I have been ‘inactive’ for the last year making a heartfelt effort with my writing. Come to think of it, I have done little else but write in the last year!!

Tell us about your other books?
Thank you for asking. I have several new books one released on Valentine’s Day titled Consenting Heart: A Very Special Valentines. Order here. It includes elements of the day I met my husband but the rest is pure sizzling fiction. Then I am contributing to a real scorcher, Alpha Fever: 22 Sizzling Contemporary and Paranormal Romance Stories. My story is about a good neighbor order here. The Butterfly Collector, below, is a gift for your kind readers. It has an interesting backdrop of BDSM. I am not proficient in that genre so it is mild, but still an interesting story I think about releasing ourselves to the care and trust of another and how we blossom as a result of what we learn about ourselves. The protagonist has a club foot, and yes, I once dated a man with a club foot. As with most disabilities, visible or not, it is our own feelings about it that are the most crippling. Another release was a fund raiser I helped with for a friend that suffers from Ataxia, a neurological disorder affecting voluntary coordination of muscle movements. I wrote an inspirational piece about when I was raped and how we can overcome anything, with the right help and desire. It is titled This Beautiful Escape. Order Here. All proceeds go to charity and you’ll learn a little more about me and have loads of inspiring stories, poems, quotes and daily reads to perk you up. I have thirteen or so books/anthologies published now so I can’t talk about each of them, however, I love Moonbeams of Unintended Consequences as one of my favs and also, along with Emily, I am writing a sequel for it. This is an interracial love story about a famous opera star and a young beautiful designer. And yes, I did ‘know’ a celebrated opera star and the famous San Francisco Whitcomb Hotel does exist. A fun release, written with my friend Chrissy Laurence, is titled Cheerleaders in Heat and that is a real 5 flame eroco-throbber. Fun and funny, but serious, it exposes the underbelly of life in South Miami’s nightlife; there is some violence that alters the course of my heroine’s life. Your readers can check out all my books and add them to their Wish List on my Amazon Author Page.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I never graduated from college. Most people do not know that about me and just assume I did. While I would never want alter the course of my life, that is my second greatest regret. But, I am happy with how my life has gone; I am wealthy beyond money, I had a great career as a Regional Director with IBM when women were just breaking the glass ceiling, and my life has been enriched by all those that have touched me and continue to love me. I have a wonderful husband who thinks it is funny I write ‘porn’ and a step-son who thinks I am awesome. Could it get any better than that?

Well, I suppose I should say “Good Bye” as I would hate to bore your readers into thinking my books are equally tiresome! They are lovely. They are all a special lot and I love each and every one of them. Read some of the reviews, speaking of reviews. You are wonderful! It has been an honor to be here with you today. I so appreciate your time and interest in sharing my work with your friends, family and fans. Thank you for having me.

If Jane Austen Wrote Erotic Romances
Reading The Para-Portage of Emily made me feel like I was reading Jane Austen or one of the Bronte sisters, if they had written erotic romances.

Wilson’s descriptive prose paints a scene like an artist paints a landscape. The story itself is hauntingly beautiful, interspersed with passionate erotic scenes that are done in a very romantic style with lots of description and emotion imbuing each one. I couldn’t help but feel a little sad while reading the story, because there is quite a bit of sadness as Emily learns about the tragically romantic past of the house she’s currently residing in, but at the same time there’s a thread of hope as well. There’s also a mystery to be solved and little hints scatter the story, like breadcrumbs, until it all comes together in the end.

If you want a completely different kind of ghostly romance, and especially if you love histories and love that crosses all barriers of time, space and death, this is definitely a book you won’t want to miss. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read, in a very good way.
~ By Lovemuffins

Cross Genre Paranormal Erotic Mystery
Should John Grisham and EL James have a secret love child, she would no doubt pen legal thrillers with a luscious layer of the erotic. They would name their child Muffy Wilson and send her to Stephen King for some pointers in the paranormal.

Wilson, in the obliquely titled “The Para-Portage of Emily”, interweaves these three diverse genres into a compelling, magic carpet of a novel that takes Emily Macque from Chicago to a bitter island estate two hundred miles north in the frozen sea. Emily is the striking junior partner in her father’s law firm, her mission, to settle the probate on an estate, her destiny to fall into the arms of Colin Jorgenson, a seaman haunted by a past love that torments his life.

Intelligent, well-written, with fully fleshed out characters and a story with more twists than a spiral staircase, “The Para-Portage of Emily” had me gripped until the very last page.
~ By Chloe

Fall in Love with the Island and Mariner’s Maiden
This is a story to savor. Ms. Wilson’s descriptions are poetic and enthralling, placing the reader in the midst of the story, and the relaxed pace of the story does not lessen the power of suspense. Shrouded in mystery, romance, and eroticism, “The Para-Portage of Emily” is a treat for the senses, a haunting indulgence. Despite hints throughout, the ending still surprised me, and though satisfied, I regretted the literary journey’s end. Highly recommended. I look forward to more from this promising series.

I really enjoyed the Para-Portage of Emily
I really enjoyed the Para-Portage of Emily… a skillfully and imaginatively told tale of love, lost and found. Mysterious twists kept me turning the pages until the end. Love conquers all, AND it was hot!

excerpt1

“Let’s go.” Jericho commanded, clearly displeased with my train of thought.

I nodded and followed after him, but my mind still raced. What would happen now? How was I supposed to protect everyone? As we strode through Ochana, I looked around at the other dragons, mostly Siens, who had no idea they were in any danger. The dragons laughed and chatted like it was any old day, and any old time, not one fear. They continued on with their usual activities; setting up and running their open-aired market stands, puffing out large flames of fire with their mouths so they could cook meals for each other, flying low in pods as they soaked up the glory and beauty of Ochana. And each of these dragon’s lives were in my hands. I needed to get my head on straight.

“Finally.” Jericho stated.

It was only one word, but enough to blaze a fire inside me. If this were all true, I had to find strength. I needed to train. I needed to know what I was up against. I turned to Jericho as we walked through town. “What other creatures can wield mahier?

“Only dragons. But there are other creatures that wield different forms of energy. Depending on the creature, each have their own names, but in human terms, I guess you would call it magic.” He shook his head in nausea, as if he detested human words for dragonic considerations.

“These creatures, what are they?”

“We need to focus on the others that would help the Carnites. There aren’t many, Carnites on their own are easily defeated, and not easy to form an alliance with. But two creatures come to mind, farro and elden. We need to make contact with them. Get a sense for what they’re worth-”

We arrived at command, which interjected Jericho’s vocal declarations. I thought about the farro and elden. I had never heard of them, ever. I concocted all sorts of images for what they could look like, maybe large brown beasts with razor sharp teeth and monster claws, the kind of evil creature that would haunt a small child’s nightmares and make them too frightened to rest their head on a pillow ever again.

At least we knew where to look for these magical imps, but what would happen when we found them?

J.A. Culican

Featured Book: The Keeper of Dragons, The Prince Returns

Hi all!! My name is J.A. Culican. I am a mom of four, a teacher and I write YA fantasy novels!

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve always enjoyed writing. I published my first novel The Keeper of Dragons just last year. The reactions I’ve received from fans all over the world has been amazing! I decided to publish this book particularly for my kids. My oldest begged me for the book. So of course I wrote it for her.

How did you come up with this storyline?
It was a story I made up as a bedtime story for my children. It evolved from there and The Keeper of Dragons was born.

What inspires you to write?
My kids, and their love of all things magical.

How did you conduct your research for The Keeper of Dragons?
It’s purely a fantasy novel, so not much research was needed. I did have to double check geographical facts around the world. Those facts I double checked by visiting the country or cities websites.

Favorites from The Keeper of Dragons:
My main character is relatable. He is just an average/typical 18 year old. Who wakes up one morning and finds out that nothing about himself is typical.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
Laid back. I’m a go with the flow type of person.

Are reader reviews important to you?
Yes. Obviously it’s great when someone loves you books. On the flip side when I receive a negative review it gives me a chance to reflect and grow within my writing.

What is your writing process?
I just write. I don’t outline or plan. I literally just sit down and go.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I am at teacher by day and a mom to four kiddos. I am also the President of a non-profit organization Puzzle Peace United. This organization helps families with children on the autism spectrum. www.puzzlepeaceunited.org

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I’m just like everyone else!

Wow, thanks for having me! To find out more about me, check out my website www.jaculican.com.

J.A. Culican is a teacher by day and a writer by night. She lives in New Jersey with her husband of eleven years and their four young children. She spends her evenings at home, with her family, watching Harry Potter and Star Wars. When not home you can find her at the soccer or field hockey fields, rooting her children on.

J.A. Culican’s inspiration to start writing came from her children and their love for all things magical. Bedtime stories turned to reality after her oldest daughter begged her for the book from which her stories of dragons came from. In turn, the series, The Keeper of Dragons was born.

blurb2

Mikhail Anton Ray: I needed her to fulfill my destiny but she became my life.

Leana Iyeroy: I’ll never submit to a vampire or another shifter – but he is so much more than either.

Micah must mate with wolf-shifter Leana to harness their collective energies, and overcome the vampire built mind-net that has infiltrated the humans robbing them of their emotions. But when Leana’s ward is kidnapped and used against them, the future of humanity is at stake.

excerpt1

Mikhail looks at the shifter girl as she passes by him, so close that if he put out his hand he can touch her cheek. Touch that skin shining with sweat, and pale under her tan as if it’s taking all she has just to keep the pain at bay.

She adjusts the strap of the scabbard that crosses between her breasts, and his eyes fall on the rise-fall-rise of her chest. Over the swell of the vest that stretches tight across, outlining her nipples.

And despite the fact that she doesn’t even notice him, despite the fact that he’s surrounded by jostling crowds, Mikhail finds himself aroused.

Heat twists his gut with such suddenness that he gasps.

It’s the second time he’s surprised himself in the space of an hour. The first was when he’d seen the girl fall to the ground in the cage… and not move.

He was sure she’d be up on her feet and downing her sword at the brute hybrid coming at her, but she hadn’t.

She’d just lain there still, so still he’d been sure she had been hurt badly or worse that she’d been killed. And before he could stop himself, before he’d even known what he’d been doing he’d run through the crowd, breaking through to the front and then he’d felled the guard at the entrance to the cage with one blow. Had taken the keys from him, unlocked the gate, slammed it behind him and had run towards the fallen figure all in a matter of seconds.

As he’d leant over her she’d moaned and something tightly clenched inside him had relaxed.

She was alive.

author-interview1

Laxmi Hariharan

Featured Book: Redemption

Hello from London 🙂

Hello and welcome, Laxmi; so nice to have you here. How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve been writing since very young and with intent from 2003. Published my first book in 2011

How did you come up with this storyline?
I wanted to write a paranormal story with a difference. Set in a futuristic Bombay where I grew up, dystopian, yet intense and romantic. Borrowing from the threads of Indian mythology yet spanning both Eastern and Western cultures.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
Writing helps me plumb the depths of my consciousness. By understanding character motivations I understand my own.

What inspires you to write?
The ‘aha’ moment from breaking a character and rebuilding him or her back and understanding why they do what they do. And hence understanding why I do what I do in life.

How did you conduct your research for Redemption?
I look for the key emotion that will be the theme of the book. In this case it was Leana and Mikhail finding Redemption. Leana putting an end to the cycle or the curse that has plagued her ancestral line for centuries.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from Redemption?
Opening of Redemption is my fave: One of us is going to die. He looks at me, the beast. Wolf. Man. Wolf? He’s both. He’s neither. He’s just like me.

More Favorites from Redemption:
I’ll give you a poem from Feral, the first book in this series for the main character of Feral and later Taken is a soldier poet You
are the only person I wish I had never met. I suspect if you knew you might have more respect for me now than you did then.

So strike a fracture through this glass this view this thing that shimmers like doubt between us, break it apart with your hands.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
My persistence

Are reader reviews important to you?
Yes they are hugely important in discoverability especially on Amazon. But I am too scared to look at them. I don’t want to get too demotivated by the not great ones or too affected by praise either. So instead I look for feedback from my beta readers who are amazing.

What do you do when you don’t write?
I like to be active – work out, yoga, walking in London and gardening and spending time with my film maker husband watching films and series.

Tell us about your other books?
Feral the first in the Many Lives Series is my favorite. About Maya a wolf girl who leaves her mate Luke to go in search of her blood family. Only to uncover secrets.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
That I hope my words will move them and help them understand themselves better. That I hope they will see a bit of themselves in my characters.

I hope you’ll read Feral the first book in this series. If you join my newsletter you’ll get Feral for free.

DREADFUL LIES.
UNEXPECTED LOVE.
IMPOSSIBLE TRUTH.

It only took one heartbeat to change my life–one chilling phone call in the middle of the night.

And then, as if my life didn’t already suck, my dad sends my brother and me to some idyllic island for the summer to live with a grandma we never met. WTH. Naturally, I rebel. In the end, I find myself shipped off to Raven Hallow…and bored to tears.

Until I get an eyeful of the mind-bendingly gorgeous Zane Hunter. The dark-hair cutie makes my pulse go bonkers, and I think, maybe this might not be so bad after all. Six feet of swoon inducing looks, with a hint of Celtic charm in his voice, he was the type of guy that left a string of broken hearts in his wake. And I had all the heartbreak I could handle.

Yet, there is something uncanny, almost supernatural about Zane, and it’s not just his devastating smirk. No matter how much distance I put between us, Raven Hallow isn’t big enough, and the sparking tension between is undeniable. Of course, the one person I want to avoid becomes my salvation.

My past comes back to terrorize me. Someone wants me dead, and the closer I get to the truth, the more I realize my whole life is a lie. I am no longer sure what is more frightening–the attempts on my life or the guy whose heart and soul are synchronized with mine.

WHITE RAVEN is the enthralling first installment in The Raven series. A YA paranormal romance full of atmosphere, self-discovery, and love that will keep you captivated until the very last page.

excerpt1

TJ and Rose kept the conversation rolling as I gave the appropriate one-word responses or a head nod. I didn’t have much of an appetite, mostly picking at my chicken Caesar salad and gazing out at the ocean, until…

His hair was black as a wintry night, eyes icy blue as a gypsy’s heart. He had a lazy saunter about him and a glint of humor twinkling in those heart-melting eyes. There was nothing loose about his body, muscles bunching as he tethered a boat to the dock. I twiddled the straw, staring
brazenly.

Good God. I wanted to have his babies. Not now, but most definitely someday. And just like that, my summer got a billion times hotter…and interesting—way more interesting. I bit my lip, mulling over how I was going to accidentally fall into his pants. Um—I mean path or even his lap would do, anything to get that one’s attention.

Drool hit the table in a mad case of fangirl, and I didn’t even know his name.

As if he sensed he was being slobbered over, his eyes scraped over me, and I held my breath. Holy hot tamales. An electric bolt of…lust maybe, I really didn’t know what it was, but it coiled through my body, making me shudder. A flicker of an unidentified emotion crossed his face, right before a secret smile appeared on his lips. Oh man, don’t get me started on his lips.

Elbows propped on the table, I rested my head on the edge of my palms, continually gazing and getting lost in the depths of his eyes. He hypnotized me. I followed his movements, my eyes glued to him. Then one of my elbows slipped off the table in classic Piper form, and down I went. I caught myself just before my chin whacked a corner of the patio table.

Only me.

Mortified, I closed my eyes.

TJ laughed. “Smooth, Pipe. I think you made a lasting impression.”

author-interview1

J.L. Weil

Featured Book: White Raven

I am super thrilled to be a part of this amazing boxed set and be in the company of such awesome authors. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jennifer Weil, but I write under J.L. Weil, and I’m most known for my Divisa Series.

Hello, Jennifer! How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

For me, it all started because I love to read. I daydream a lot, and then one day, I started to write down the scenes running in my head. When I actually sat down to write my first book, I felt utterly ridiculous and excited at the same time. Luminescence was the end result, my very first novel. For the next two years, I literally wrote non-stop, releasing nine books. White Raven was my twelfth novel, and I currently have written a totally of fifteen books.

My publishing journey has had its ups and downs. I’ve learned so much, and most of it from trial and error (lots of error). I virtual knew nothing about self-publishing when I started, and even though I have done the traditional route, for me personally, self-publishing fits. I enjoy the creative freedom and flexibility of making my own schedule.

How did you come up with this storyline?
Umm, I do a ton of daydreaming. Actually, I sleep with a notebook and a pen on my nightstand. There have been many times I’ve woken up and scratched something down. The fun part is trying to decipher it in the morning. I love myths and legends, particularly those Celtic inspired.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
I absolutely love being a writer. My favorite part would be sharing the excitement of something I created with my readers. I love the interaction and the shared love for the characters. It is absolutely amazing hearing how excited readers get for release day, and I definitely feed off the energy. It motivates me to keep writing. It’s also pretty to cool to work in your PJ’s and not have to care what my hair looks like.

Are there bad aspects of being a writer? For me personally, my biggest obstacle to overcome is negativity. I’m kind of a sensitive person, so developing a backbone has been a challenge. No matter how many hundreds of readers tell me how much they’ve enjoyed a book or loved a character, it only takes one negative comment. It doesn’t always affect me in major ways, but it might stick with me, maybe sneak back while I’m writing.

For readers who don’t know about your books, tell us a little about them?
Romance is my favorite genre. And I adore young love. There is nothing better than exploring that first kiss, those intense crazy feelings, and being so blissfully in love that nothing else matters.

I love to write about headstrong females with smart mouths that get them in loads of trouble, and drool-worthy alpha males who get knocked on their butt all in the name of love. Add a bit of paranormal and magic to the mix and that’s my recipe for a novel.

What do you think makes a good story?
A really hot, mouth-watering bad boy. I am a sucker for them. The more possessive and snarky, the better. Lots of kissing and stuff, if you get my drift. I also like my heroine to be sassy and empowering.

Are you a Plotting (plot out) and Pantsing (free writing) writing?
No plotting here. I pretty much fly by the seat of my pants. My style consists of a bunch of scribbled notes of ideas and scenes that come to me in the most inconvenient times, like when I’m stuck in traffic, in the shower, or waiting in line at the grocery store. Trying to piece those together in a story that flows can be interesting. Most of the time when I get to the end of a book, I’m shocked it all came together. I also think I suffer quite a bit from procrastination thanks to Twitter and Facebook.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from White Raven?
“I think you dropped something, Pipe,” he said.
“Uh, what?”
“Your standards,” he sneered.”

“Oh, so suddenly you’re an expert in crazy?”
“After meeting you, I feel I could write a thesis on the subject.”

“…I will be your sword. I will be your shield. I will defend you until my last breath. This vow I swear freely, to be your weapon as long as you shall live.”

Who is your favorite character from White Raven and why?
Zane Hunter. I love bad boys, and Zane being death reaper definitely has a bad side. I like to let my lead males be bad. The more trouble they cause the better. They’re more fun that way!

Are reader reviews important to you?
Extremely. I like knowing how the reader felt about the story, or if they connected with a certain character. Those are elements I want to know if they came across to the reader as I had hoped. For me, characterization is important, and I like to keep things as real as possible. I want the reader to forget it’s a paranormal story. And of course lots of hot guys help. The feedback I get from readers helps me know areas I might need to pay more attention to. I want to grow as a writer with each book.

What are five facts readers might not know about you?
1. I am obsessed with tattoos and piercings. They can be found in almost all my stories.
2. Jensen Ackles is my celebrity crush. *sigh*
3. I love Celtic, magical, and mystical elements.
4. Green Bay Packers are my favorite team!
5. I’m shy and suck at chitchat.

Tell us about your other books?
I have two other series besides the Raven Series. The Divisa series is about a half-demon and the girl he would risk everything to save. Chase and Angel have a unique bond. And through the series the bond only deepens, solidifying Angel to Chase and consequently to Hell. This series is filled with romance, action, challenges, death, and an unbreakable love. I have mad love for these two characters.

The Luminescence Trilogy was the first series I ever wrote and is packed with magic and young love. Brianna and Gavin captivate the pages of this series. In a journey self-discovery, Bri must learn to embrace the power inside her.

What are you currently working on?
I am working on a new series, Beauty Never Dies Chronicles. It is a Dystopian Fantasy Romance with a fairytale spin. Slumber, book 1, will be out January 10, 2017.

Thanks for stopping by guys! I hope you’ll check out Dark Legends and find yourself capture by the stories inside.

Award-winning and Bestselling author J.L. Weil writes Teen & New Adult Paranormal Romances about spunky, smart mouth girls who always wind up in dire situations. For every sassy girl, there is an equally mouthwatering, overprotective guy. Of course there is lots of kissing. And stuff. Most of her books are for ages 16+. They usually have what she considers the good stuff – sexual content (oh yeah) and swearing. You have been warned 😉

blurb2

In the late 21st century, scientists created a serum that gave every person nine lives, also known as souls. Flush with expendable life, Earth collapsed into war and anarchy, leaving the Catholic Church to step in and take control. In a world where the stealing of souls is big business, it takes people like Constance Grace, detective in the Soul Theft Division, to hunt the criminals down and strip them of their remaining souls.

When social-climbing con man, Noah Hannock, plunks himself on the church’s radar, he becomes Constance’s problem. With a brand new partner, Mikon Cross and seven of her nine given souls remaining, Connie has to enter high society under a too-familiar alias to tempt Noah into her web.

While the chemistry between Connie and Mikon is scorching hot, the reality is they don’t trust each other. Each with their own secrets to protect, the hunt for Noah Hannock threatens them both. The only way they can survive is if they learn to lay themselves, heart and souls, on the line for each other.

excerpt1

He watched as she pulled her unruly mane up into a messy bun on top of her head. Every time he saw her do it, he couldn’t help but think it was a move specifically designed by women to turn men on. The pale skin of her delicate neck was now on full display, as were her toned shoulders and biceps. Usually he liked his women soft, and while Connie did have softness here and there, mostly she was made up of backbone, hard-toned muscles, and coffee.
“Stop being a creeper,” she said, breaking the spell.
He looked up. She was giving him a pointed look with an eyebrow arched. Somehow he had forgotten himself and sat staring at her. Will this night never end?
“Sorry, I was zoning out,” he said.
“Yeah, on my tits.”
“Really, I wasn’t staring at them. I was just thinking.”
“Uh-huh.”
There was no talking to her. He climbed up and went to his own bed. She was right, but he wasn’t going to admit it. He’d have to hear about it for the next year otherwise. “How are you feeling?” he asked after a few moments of silence.
“Still a little messed up from the drug, but, not terrible,” she said.
“That’s good.” He could tell she wasn’t saying it all though. She sat on top of her comforter, shoulders slumped, as she rocked ever so slightly back and forth. There was no way he could let her stay like that all night. If she was to be tortured then he could at least bear some of the burden.
He got up and walked over to her, moved behind her on the bed, and circled his arms around her upper body. She didn’t move, didn’t even breath, for a few seconds. It was a huge relief when she sagged into him, allowing him to hug her more comfortably. The intensity with which his heart leapt and battered against his ribcage was astounding. If heaven and hell could merge it would live in such a moment. Her scent engulfed him, consumed him, and made him think of all the things he knew he shouldn’t. It was a shock when he realized she was guarding her thoughts to him. Not effectively, but she was making an attempt to ease his discomfort.
“Here,” he said, shifting his legs open so she could lean back into him and stretch out as well.
Such an unlikely pair they made. Only having met a month ago and now here they were in a gilded hotel room, holding each other gently. He would never have imagined a moment like this between them when they first met. Father Reynolds wouldn’t have either.
Constance turned to face him, and he watched helplessly as she slipped her tongue out and wet her lips.
“I’m going to kiss you, Mikon, unless you stop me,” she whispered, only inches away from his mouth.

Monica Corwin

Featured Book: Soulless

Hello everyone, I’m so thrilled to be here. I can’t wait to tell you about Soulless, which was previously published as Soulless. If I get too excited and ramble please feel free to direct me back to the questions.

Hey, Monica! How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I started writing when I was a little girl but didn’t start actively writing looking to publish until my early 20’s. Almost six years now.

How did you come up with this storyline?
Well, like a lot of my stories I get the main idea from a dream. But, it was after I watched a movie about time…and how people’s timers were on their arms. That gave me the idea for the souls to add into the world I had already built around the dream.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
The best is interacting with readers. I love hearing about books and how much they loved my work. Most of the time I assume I write books and no one ever reads them. It’s nice when someone proves me wrong. The worst aspect is marketing. It’s not something I have gotten figured out. It doesn’t help that I’m awkward as hell though.

What inspires you to write?
Lots of things can inspire me to write. Most of the time is a book, or movie, or watching a show about a character who has reaching their goals…it makes me want to push toward my
own.

How did you conduct your research for Soulless?
I mostly had to do a lot of research on the Catholic Church which was both frightening and fascinating.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from Soulless?
~ “He watched as she pulled her unruly mane up into a messy bun on top of her head. Every time he saw her do it, he couldn’t help but think it was a move specifically designed by women to turn men on.”
~ “I’m going to pout now because I wasted a perfectly beautiful dress on such a craptastic night…”
~ “If heaven and hell could merge it would live in such a moment.”

What would your friends say is your best quality?
Oh man…probably my loyalty. I am devoted to those I care about and would give them anything in my power, including a kidney, to help them.

Are reader reviews important to you?
Um…I will say they aren’t important to ME but they are important. I think when a book is done it is no longer the writer’s…it belongs to the reader, as do reviews. Those reviews aren’t for me, or about me, they are for the reader.

What do you do when you don’t write?
Uh read, a lot. I also fix typewriters. I know, I’m a dork.

Tell us about your other books?
I write mainly paranormal romance with strong heroines and unique worlds. My other series, Revelations, centers around female four horseman of the apocalypse.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?
I adore you. Even if you hate my work I thank you for giving that time to read it. Thank you for giving it, and me, a
chance.

Thank you so much for having me and listening to me ramble.
XOXO Monica
